Hanuman Enters Lanka and Encounters Laṅkā-devatā
ततः संवर्तयामास वामहस्तस्य सोऽङ्गुलीः।मुष्टिनाऽऽभिजघानैनां हनुमान् क्रोधमूर्छितः।।।।स्त्री चेति मन्यमानेन नातिक्रोधः स्वयं कृतः।
tataḥ saṃvartayāmāsa vāma-hastasya so 'ṅgulīḥ | muṣṭinā 'bhijaghāna enāṃ hanumān krodha-mūrchitaḥ || strī ceti manyamānena nātikrodhaḥ svayaṃ kṛtaḥ |
ततः हनुमान् क्रोधमूर्छितः वामहस्तस्य अङ्गुलीः संवर्त्य मुष्टिना एनां अभिजघान; “स्त्री” इति मन्यमानः स्वक्रोधं नातिवर्धयामास।
Overcome by anger, Hanuman clenched the fingers of his left hand and hit her with his fist. Considering her to be, after all, a woman he did not turn outrageous.
Dharma is shown as proportionate response and restraint: even when provoked, Hanumān limits his anger and force, mindful of the opponent’s status as a woman.
After being attacked, Hanumān retaliates with a punch, but consciously restrains himself from excessive violence.
Self-control (dama) and maryādā: he acts in defense yet keeps his fury within ethical bounds.
