Hanuman Enters Lanka and Encounters Laṅkā-devatā
न शक्या मामवज्ञाय प्रवेष्टुं नगरी त्वया।अद्य प्राणैः परित्यक्तः स्वप्स्यसे निहतो मया।।।।
na śakyā mām avajñāya praveṣṭuṃ nagarī tvayā | adya prāṇaiḥ parityaktaḥ svapsyase nihato mayā ||
मामवज्ञाय त्वया नगरी प्रवेष्टुं न शक्या; अद्य मया निहतः प्राणान् परित्यज्य मृत्युनिद्रां स्वप्स्यसे।
"It is not possible for you to enter this city ignoring my presence. Soon you will be killed. You will give up your life and attain eternal sleep.
The verse problematizes coercion: it shows how power asserts itself through threats, inviting reflection on dharmic force—violence is not dharmic merely because it is authorized.
The guardian blocks Hanumān’s entry and threatens to kill him if he proceeds.
From the antagonist’s side: uncompromising enforcement; from the epic’s ethical lens: a contrast that sets up Hanumān’s controlled strength.
