Adhyaya 85 — The Gods’ Hymn to the Goddess and the Emergence of Kaushiki; Shumbha Sends His Envoy
त्रैलोक्ये वररत्नानि मम वश्यान्यशेषतः ।
तथैव गजरत्नं च हृत्वा देवेन्द्रवाहनम् ॥
trailokye vararatnāni mama vaśyānyaśeṣataḥ /
tathaiva gajaratnaṃ ca hṛtvā devendravāhanam
त्रिषु लोकेषु यानि यानि रत्नानि श्रेष्ठानि सन्ति, तानि सर्वाणि मम वशे वर्तन्ते; तथा गजेन्द्ररत्नमपि—ऐरावतं इन्द्रवाहनं—मया गृहीतम्।
Asuric pride is shown through the claim of total dominion over all ‘ratnas’ (valuables). The verse frames adharma as appropriation—seizing what belongs to devas—contrasted with Devi’s dharmic order that restores rightful balance.
This passage is primarily within ‘vaṃśānucarita’/narrative of divine-asuric conflict (not sarga/pratisarga). It is a didactic episode embedded in the Purana’s narrative function rather than a cosmological catalog.
The ‘ratnas’ symbolize powers and faculties. The asura’s claim over them indicates ego’s attempt to possess all strengths; Devi represents the integrating wisdom that cannot be possessed and instead demands worthiness (victory over pride).
