The verse underscores the ethical consequence of choosing war: once battle is joined, ideals and comforting self-justifications collapse before the visible suffering and upheaval. Sañjaya’s warning implies that Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s failure to restrain adharma will culminate in an undeniable, irreversible reality on the battlefield.
Sañjaya describes a future battlefield scene to Dhṛtarāṣṭra: Nakula and Sahadeva, the powerful sons of Mādrī, will surge through and disrupt the Kaurava host, compared to two great elephants churning up a mass. It is a vivid foretelling meant to shake Dhṛtarāṣṭra out of complacency.
