अनागतश्र मोक्षश्न कृष्णद्वैपायन: प्रभु: । संदर्भ भारतस्यास्य कृतवान् धर्मकाम्यया
anāgataśramokṣajñaḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ prabhuḥ | saṃdarbhya bhāratasyāsya kṛtavān dharmakāmyayā ||
वैशम्पायन उवाच—अनागतश्र मोक्षज्ञः कृष्णद्वैपायनः प्रभुः । संदर्भं भारतस्यास्य कृतवान् धर्मकाम्यया ॥

The epic is presented as a deliberately crafted guide: Vyāsa, knowing how beings can be freed from future suffering, composes the Bhārata with the intention of strengthening dharma—so that ethical discernment and right conduct may lead toward liberation.
The narrator Vaiśampāyana attributes the composition and arrangement of the Mahābhārata to Vyāsa, emphasizing his authority and his motive: the work is woven together not merely as history, but as a dharma-oriented teaching meant to benefit listeners and readers.
