Educational Q&A

True gain is not endless acquisition but contentment grounded in one’s dharma and inner excellence. Bhīṣma urges Kāśyapa to recognize that being ‘foremost among brāhmaṇas’—i.e., possessing virtue, learning, and restraint—is a higher attainment than additional material or external profit.

In the didactic setting of Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma addresses the sage Kāśyapa, advising him to remain satisfied with what he has already obtained. He reinforces the point by praising Kāśyapa’s spiritual stature as the best among brāhmaṇas, implying that such status itself is the greatest ‘profit’.
