The verse frames ideal kingship as generosity and protection of subjects, while also expressing the warrior-ethic notion that dying alongside a righteous leader can be seen as a path to heaven; it highlights remorse for failing in loyal duty.
Sañjaya reports a lament in which the speaker addresses a king, confessing shame that they did not go to heaven with him as their leader, praising him as a benefactor and guardian of the people.
