Aśvatthāman’s Curse, Parikṣit’s Future, and the Mani’s Restitution
tataḥ rājñaḥ ājñāṃ prāpya mahābalī bhīmasenaḥ sāṃ divyāṃ maṇiṃ draupadyāḥ haste nyadadhāt, idaṃ ca uvāca— ayaṃ bhadre tava maṇiḥ putrahantur jitaḥ sa te | uttiṣṭha śokam utsṛjya kṣātradharmam anusmara, bhadre ||
The verse urges disciplined resilience: even amid unbearable loss, one should not be consumed by grief but recall one’s dharma—here, the kṣatriya ideal of steadiness, courage, and duty—while also acknowledging that wrongdoing has been checked and justice (symbolized by the seized jewel) has been secured.
After Aśvatthāmā’s night massacre, he is subdued and his divine jewel is taken. On the king’s instruction, Bhīma hands that jewel to Draupadī, declaring that the killer of her sons has been defeated, and he exhorts her to rise from mourning and remember kṣatriya duty.
