Bhīmasena and Dhṛṣṭadyumna’s Speeches on Kṣātra-Dharma
tatrāsīt sumahad yuddhaṃ droṇas tathā paraiḥ saha | ghore tamasi magnānāṃ nighnatām itaretaram ||

The verse highlights how, when perception is clouded—here symbolized by literal darkness—discernment collapses and violence becomes indiscriminate. It serves as a moral warning that loss of clarity (viveka) in conflict leads to mutual destruction and ethical breakdown.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that a massive clash erupted with Droṇa fighting the opposing forces. Because the battlefield was engulfed in dreadful darkness, combatants could not clearly recognize one another and struck each other down in chaotic, mutual slaughter.
