Śalya–Bhīma Gadāyuddham (मद्रराज-भीमसेन गदायुद्धम्)
sañjaya uvāca | lakṣmaṇaḥ kṣatradevena vimardam akarod bhṛśam | yathā viṣṇuḥ purā rājan hiraṇyākṣeṇa saṃyuge ||
The verse uses a divine-historical comparison to highlight the scale of human conflict: warriors may display extraordinary courage, yet war remains a crushing ordeal. Ethically, it underscores how epic narration frames battlefield prowess within larger models of righteous strength and cosmic exemplars.
Sanjaya reports to King Dhritarashtra that Lakshmana is locked in an intense, close-quarters battle with Kshatradeva. To convey the ferocity, he likens it to Vishnu’s famed combat with the asura Hiranyaksha.
