Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a battlefield ethic where disabling an opponent’s means of combat (the bow) and undermining his public symbol of identity and morale (the banner) are decisive acts. It reflects how, in kṣatriya warfare, victory often turns on both physical capability and psychological steadiness.

Droṇa reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Duryodhana struck Yudhāmanyu with precision: first severing his banner with one arrow, then breaking his bow with another, thereby weakening Yudhāmanyu’s fighting capacity and battlefield presence.
