Droṇa-parva 112: Karṇa–Bhīma Engagement and Duryodhana’s Protective Order
māvamaṃsthā vaco mahān gurus tava guroḥ aham | etau dvau kāraṇau jñātvāhaṃ tvām asmin kārye bravīmi | tvaṃ mama vākyaṃ nāvamanyethāḥ, yato 'haṃ tava guroḥ api guruḥ ||
The verse emphasizes dharmic hierarchy and disciplined listening: counsel from a rightful elder/authority should not be dismissed, especially when given for a necessary task. Respect (guru-bhāva) and obedience to legitimate guidance are presented as ethical obligations.
In the midst of the Drona Parva’s tense wartime decisions, Yudhiṣṭhira asserts his moral and hierarchical authority over the listener, insisting that his instruction for a specific undertaking be accepted without contempt, grounding his demand in his status as an elder—“even the guru of your guru.”
