Chapter 33: Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Welfare-Inquiries and Vidura’s Yogic Absorption
अदर्शनादापतित: पुनश्चादर्शनं गत: । नाहं तं वेशझि नासौ मां न च मे5स्ति विरागता,वह मुक्त पुरुष अव्यक्तसे ही प्रकट हुआ था और पुनः अव्यक्तमें ही लीन हो गया। न मैं उसे जानता हूँ न वह मुझेः। (फिर तुम भी वैसे ही बन्धनमुक्त क्यों न हो गये? ऐसा प्रश्न होनेपर कहते हैं।) मुझमें वैराग्य नहीं है (पर वैराग्य ही मोक्षका मुख्य साधन है।)
adarśanād āpatitaḥ punaś cādarśanaṁ gataḥ | nāhaṁ taṁ veda hi nāsau māṁ na ca me ’sti virāgatā ||
वैशम्पायन उवाच—अदर्शनादापतितः पुनश्चादर्शनं गतः। नाहं तं वेद्मि नासौ मां; न च मेऽस्ति विरागता।

Liberation is not gained merely by witnessing a liberated being or a mysterious appearance; the decisive inner qualification is virāgatā (vairāgya), dispassion and detachment. Without that inner renunciation, one remains bound even if one has seen extraordinary phenomena.
A mysterious person appears from an unseen/unmanifest state and disappears again. The speaker (Vaiśampāyana, narrating) states he has no real acquaintance with that being, and admits he lacks dispassion—answering an implied question about why he did not attain the same freedom from bondage.
