Educational Q&A

Food (anna)—as basic sustenance and grain—underlies both enjoyment (pleasant objects) and productive activity (means of undertaking). Ethical governance and social welfare therefore depend on securing nourishment and agriculture.

In Bhīṣma’s instruction to Yudhiṣṭhira in the Anuśāsana Parva, he emphasizes a practical foundation of dharma: the prosperity of society and the success of human endeavors rest on the availability of food, a truth he presents as already familiar to the listener.
