Nābhāga’s Inheritance, Śiva’s Verdict, and the Rise of Ambarīṣa—Prelude to Durvāsā’s Offense
भ्रातरोऽभाङ्क्त किं मह्यं भजाम पितरं तव । त्वां ममार्यास्तताभाङ्क्षुर्मा पुत्रक तदादृथा: ॥ २ ॥
bhrātaro ’bhāṅkta kiṁ mahyaṁ bhajāma pitaraṁ tava tvāṁ mamāryās tatābhāṅkṣur mā putraka tad ādṛthāḥ
नाभाग उवाच—भ्रातरः, पितृदायात् मम किं भागं दत्तम्? ते ऊचुः—तव भागः पिता एव। स पितरं गत्वा अवदत्—आर्य, भ्रातृभिः त्वमेव मम भागत्वेन दत्तः। पिता उवाच—पुत्रक, तेषां वञ्चनवाक्येषु मा विश्वसिहि; अहं तव द्रव्यं नास्मि॥
This verse models steadiness and dharma: even when rejected by brothers, one should not become bitter, but continue honoring rightful duties and elders’ intentions.
She reassures him that the situation is not a personal failure; elders had sanctioned and desired the match/decision, so he should remain composed and act righteously.
When facing family conflict, avoid resentment, stay respectful in duty, and keep emotional balance—respond with integrity rather than retaliation.
