Sukta 69

Sukta 10.69

Rishi

Vadhryaśva (as named patron/associated seer in the hymn’s framing)

Devata

Agni

Chandas

Jagatī (probable for RV 10.69; long pādas typical, but needs metrical verification)

Mantra 6

Mantra 7

Mantra 8

Mantra 9

Mantra 10

Mantra 11

Inside Sukta 69

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni’s auspicious ‘visions’ and gracious leading for Vadhryaśva, highlighting right relationship and right approach to Fire.

  2. Development

Agni is portrayed as growing through ghee-offerings, shining vividly, and becoming intensely radiant when tended and purified by human hands and voices within communities of good friendship.

  3. Climax

Agni’s grand capacity is declared—long-threaded in work, great in outpouring, crossing many barriers and founding many paths—radiant among the radiant.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes in direct supplication: this ancient, ever-kindled Agni as Vṛtrahan is asked to stand guard against pressing hostile forces, near and far.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the bright, ever-young Fire kindled in front of the people, approached with ghee and reverent invocation; he grows by offerings, shines vividly, and is continually ‘purified’ and made radiant through human tending.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and gods (carrier of oblations), awakener of divine presence, and a protective force that breaks obstructions and repels hostile powers (Vṛtrahan aspect).
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and luminous intelligence that, when rightly cultivated (mṛjyamāna—purified), becomes a steady inner fire: clarity, aspiration, and courage that overcomes inner ‘envelopers’ (tamas, inertia, fear).

The seer

  • Vādhryaśva (Vadhryaśva)Known in the hymn’s framing as the patron-associated seer whose relationship with Agni is marked by ‘auspicious visions’ and effective ritual kindling, presenting Agni as guide, purifier, and protector for the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

It teaches that Agni becomes a powerful guide and protector when kindled correctly and honored with offerings, bringing brightness, right direction, and safety to the community.

Ghee is the classic oblation that strengthens Agni’s flame, and kindling him ‘in front’ means placing Fire at the forefront of communal and ritual life—so he leads and witnesses the rite.

Vṛtrahan means ‘slayer of Vṛtra,’ the force that blocks and envelops. In this hymn it highlights Agni’s ability to break obstacles and stand guard against threats, both near and far.
