Mohinī-ākhyāna: The Trial of Ekādaśī and the King’s Satya-saṅkalpa
ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः । यस्त्वया नृपते पुण्यः कृतोऽयं शपथः किल । एकादश्यां न भोक्तव्यं पक्षयोरुभयोरपि ॥ २ ॥
brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ | yastvayā nṛpate puṇyaḥ kṛto'yaṃ śapathaḥ kila | ekādaśyāṃ na bhoktavyaṃ pakṣayorubhayorapi || 2 ||
Брахманы сказали: «О царь, воистину ты принял этот благочестивый обет: в день Экадаши не следует вкушать пищу — в обеих половинах месяца, светлой и тёмной».
Brahmanas
Vrata: Ekādaśī-vrata
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
It affirms Ekādaśī as a recurring, meritorious vow (śapatha/vrata) and stresses consistency—observing the discipline in both lunar fortnights—making restraint a steady form of dharma.
By prescribing Ekādaśī fasting as a regular practice, it supports bhakti through self-control and sacred timing—preparing the devotee for worship and remembrance (especially of Viṣṇu) rather than indulgence.
It reflects Jyotiṣa-style calendrical discipline: Ekādaśī is defined by the lunar tithi within both pakṣas (śukla and kṛṣṇa), guiding when the vrata (no eating) should be observed.
