Adhyaya 25 — Madālāsā’s Return, Royal Succession, and the First Teaching to Vikrānta
काननेṣu च रम्येषु तथैवोपवनेṣu च ।
पुण्यक्षयं वाञ्छमाना सापि कामोपभोगतः ॥
kānaneṣu ca ramyeṣu tathaivopavaneṣu ca | puṇyakṣayaṃ vāñchamānā sāpi kāmopabogataḥ ||

Purāṇic ethics often treats pleasure as not ‘free’: it draws down accumulated puṇya. The verse hints that indulgence can be a phase that culminates in dispassion once its karmic momentum is spent.

‘Puṇyakṣaya’ can be read as the intentional emptying of karmic credit that sustains worldly status, preparing the ground for inner awakening and jñāna-oriented instruction.
