Atithi-satkāra and the Consolation of Wise Counsel (अतिथिसत्कारः प्रज्ञानवचनस्य च पराश्वासनम्)
पुराहमात्मज: पार्थ प्रथित: कारणान्तरे
purāham ātmajaḥ pārtha prathitaḥ kāraṇāntare
О Партха, в давние времена я был прославлен как сын — знаменит при иных обстоятельствах.
तामिन्द्र उवाच गच्छ नहुषस्त्वया वाच्योथ<पूर्वेण मामृषियुक्तेन यानेन त्वमधिरूढ
Fame, identity, and social standing are contingent on causes and circumstances; therefore one should not cling to them as absolute, but act according to dharma with humility.
The speaker addresses Arjuna (Pārtha) and recalls a past situation in which he was famous as someone’s son, using that recollection to frame a moral reflection on how reputation depends on circumstances.
