Dāyavibhāga (Inheritance Apportionment) and Household Precedence — Dialogue of Yudhiṣṭhira and Bhīṣma

अन्यैर्गुणैरुपेतं तु शुल्क॑ याचन्ति बान्धवा: । अलंकृत्वा वहस्वेति यो दद्यादनुकूलत:

anyair guṇair upetaṃ tu śulkaṃ yācanti bāndhavāḥ | alaṅkṛtvā vahasveti yo dadyād anukūlataḥ ||

Бхишма сказал: Родичи девушки просят «выкуп за невесту» лишь тогда, когда она обременена иными неблагоприятными условиями или качествами (например, возрастом и т. п.). Но если будущего жениха приглашают и говорят: «Укрась её и возьми себе в жёны», и он, дав ей украшения, вступает с ней в брак, то такой поступок согласен с дхармой.
