Umā’s Inquiry and the Manifestation of the Third Eye
yad annaṃ nābhijānāti yad bhojyaṃ nābhinandati | bhakṣyaṃ vā yadi vā lehyaṃ tat sarvaṃ varjayāmy aham ||
Ethical self-discipline expressed through restraint in consumption: one should avoid what is deemed improper and cultivate alignment with a principled standard, showing loyalty and regulated appetite rather than indulgence.
Bhishma quotes a speaker describing her conduct in relation to her husband/master: she mirrors his judgments about what foods are acceptable, rejecting any items he would not accept or enjoy—covering all categories of edibles (chewed, eaten, licked).
