Śāṇḍilī–Sumanā-saṃvāda: Sat-strī-samudācāra and Pati-dharma
Conduct of the Virtuous Wife
iti vedoktam ṛṣibhiḥ purastāt parikalpitam | idānīṃ caiva naḥ kṛtyaṃ purastāc ca pariśrutam ||
That dharma is grounded in Vedic injunctions and the ancient seers’ established practice; what has been transmitted and heard from olden times remains binding as present duty.
Vyāsa affirms that a certain rule of conduct being discussed is not novel: it was prescribed long ago by ṛṣis in line with the Veda, is well-known by tradition, and therefore must be followed now as an obligation.
