Śama-prāptiḥ — Gautamī–Lubdhaka–Pannaga–Mṛtyu–Kāla-saṃvāda
Restraint through the Analysis of Karma and Time
yadi kāle tu doṣo 'sti yadi tatrāpi neṣyate | doṣo naiva parīkṣyo me na hy atra adhikṛtā vayam ||
The verse emphasizes ethical restraint: one should not rush to assign blame—whether to fate (kāla) or to others—especially when one lacks the rightful authority or competence to judge. It models humility and a refusal to indulge in fault-finding.
The serpent, speaking in a reflective tone, declines to determine where fault lies. He considers the possibility that Time itself may be responsible, yet concludes that investigating दोष (blame) is not his role, and he is not entitled to conduct such a moral inquiry.
