Duḥṣanta–Śakuntalā: Gandharva Marriage and Succession Condition
वैशम्पायन उवाच दुर्योधनो युयुत्सुश्न राजन् दुःशासनस्तथा । दुःसहो दुःशलश्चैव दुर्मुखश्च॒ तथापर:
vaiśampāyana uvāca duryodhano yuyutsuś ca rājan duḥśāsanas tathā | duḥsaho duḥśalaś caiva durmukhaś ca tathāparaḥ ||
Вайшампаяна сказал: «О царь, (среди сыновей Дхритараштры были) Дурьодхана и Ююцу, а также Духшасана; затем Духсаха, Духшала, Дурмукха и ещё один».
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Though primarily genealogical, the verse supports a Mahābhārata-wide ethical pattern: lineage and power are narrated alongside names and reputations that later crystallize into choices of dharma or adharma—reminding the listener that character, not birth alone, determines moral standing.
Vaiśampāyana continues enumerating members of Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s family, naming prominent Kauravas (and Duḥśalā) as part of the broader account of the Kuru lineage given to King Janamejaya.
