FAQs

It situates the Yamunā in its Himalayan provenance (Himādri = the Himalaya), a common Purāṇic way of anchoring rivers to their sacred mountain origins and thereby enhancing their tīrtha-status.

It is an honorific for a great ascetic or spiritually potent figure within the episode. The verse’s phrasing suggests Nandayantī is connected to, or seeks to please/approach, such an ascetic authority as part of her quest for protection.

It frames the journey as refuge-seeking rather than ordinary travel. In Purāṇic narrative logic, reaching a sacred river/shrine while seeking protection often marks a transition into divine intervention, ritual efficacy, or the unfolding of a vow-driven outcome.
