Pitṛ-sarga and the Greatness of Śrāddha: The Inquiry
यथोत्पन्नस्तथैवाहं कुमार इति विश्रुतः । तस्मात्सनत्कुमारं मे नामैतत्कथितं मुने
yathotpannastathaivāhaṃ kumāra iti viśrutaḥ | tasmātsanatkumāraṃ me nāmaitatkathitaṃ mune
Assim como nasci, assim mesmo tornei-me célebre como “Kumāra”, o eternamente jovem. Por isso, ó sábio, declara-se que meu nome é Sanatkumāra.
Sanatkumara
Offering: naivedya
The verse highlights the principle that a realized being’s identity reflects an inner spiritual state: “Sanat” signifies the ever-abiding, timeless awareness, and “Kumāra” points to purity and unaging spiritual freshness—qualities aligned with Shaiva insight into the deathless Self under Pati (Shiva).
By affirming a sacred name rooted in timelessness, the verse supports Saguna worship as a doorway to the Nirguna truth: devotion to Shiva’s Linga form purifies the pashu (bound soul) so that the eternal, unaging consciousness (sanat) is recognized.
Contemplate the meaning of sacred names while doing japa—especially the Panchakshara “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—cultivating steady, youthful clarity of mind (kumāra-bhāva) as an aid to meditation.
