Worship of Gajānana and the Procedure of Aupāsana-Homa
Suta Goswami (narrating the Shiva Purana’s Kailasa teachings to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Mantra: praṇava (Oṃ) explicitly; and the cited Vedic incipit: “ahaṃ vṛkṣasya rerive …” (anuvāka).
Type: gayatri
Role: teaching
It teaches mantra-yoga in a Shaiva frame: the Praṇava (Om) is treated as Śiva-vācaka, and other sacred recitations are to be internalized into Om, then repeated—showing disciplined japa as a means to steady the mind and orient it to Pati (Śiva).
In Linga/Saguna worship, sound (mantra) is a primary upacāra. By centering Gāyatrī and Vedic anuvākas in the Praṇava identified with Śiva, the devotee performs inner worship (mānasa-pūjā) that supports external Linga-pūjā and leads toward recognizing Śiva as the indwelling Lord.
A japa-sequence: (1) contemplate and ‘merge’ Gāyatrī into Om (Praṇava), (2) repeat Om as Śiva’s designation, and (3) again chant the specified Vedic anuvāka (“ahaṃ vṛkṣasya rerive…”), maintaining focused repetition as a meditative discipline.
