Sukta 1.7

Rishi

Madhucchandas Vaiśvāmitra (traditional attribution for RV 1.1–1.11; RV 1.7 commonly placed under this seer in Anukramaṇī tradition)

Devata

Indra

Chandas

Gāyatrī (dominant meter of RV 1.1–1.10; this verse conforms to the compact praise style typical of Gāyatrī)

Inside Sukta 7

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by insisting that it is Indra—Indra the Vast—whom singers and hymn-makers affirm and praise with inspired speech.

  2. Development

Praise becomes functional: Indra is approached as the constant giver, and the worshippers ask him to enlarge the cherished offering-essence and protect it from loss.

  3. Climax

A strong petition for irresistible aid—Indra as apratiṣkuta, the power none can repel—turning increase and victory toward the sacrificers.

  4. Where it settles

It ends with a sweeping, all-sides invocation and a decisive request: may Indra be ‘ours alone’ (kevala), wholly committed to the worshippers’ cause.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is hailed as bṛhat (the Vast), vṛṣan (the Bull of force), the hero who is intensified by arká (radiant hymn-power) and praised by inspired vāṇī (utterances). He is the foremost recipient of early Soma-era praise, approached for strength, protection, and decisive aid.
  • Cosmic functionHe embodies sovereign might that releases abundance, breaks obstruction, secures space for life and order, and empowers the community through victory and increase.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies the awakened force of will and luminous courage that overcomes inner resistance, enlarges one’s “offering” of energy and intention, and concentrates power toward a single, undivided aim (kevala).

The seer
