Withdrawal of the Coronation: Rama’s Counsel to Lakshmana
यस्या मदभिषेकार्थे मानसं परितप्यते।माता मे सा यथा न स्यात्सविशङ्का तथा कुरु।।।।
yasyā mad-abhiṣekārthe mānasaṃ paritapyate | mātā me sā yathā na syāt sa-viśaṅkā tathā kuru ||
Age de modo que minha mãe—cujo coração ardia ante a perspectiva da minha consagração—não permaneça atormentada pela dúvida.
O Lakshmana! our younger mother (Kaikeyi) cannot be blamed for her obstruction to my coronation. Overpowered by destiny, she is speaking such unpleasant words. This you know is the impact of destiny.ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē dvāviṅśassargaḥ৷৷Thus ends the twentysecond sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
Dharma is sensitivity to elders/parents: Rāma seeks to remove his mother’s anxiety rather than assert personal entitlement.
Rāma anticipates Kaikeyī’s lingering suspicion about the coronation and asks Lakṣmaṇa to act to reassure her.
Mātṛ-bhakti (reverence toward the mother) and compassion—Rāma prioritizes her peace of mind.
