The Tale of Sukalā: Testing Pativratā Fidelity and the Body-as-House Teaching

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातमात्मवृत्तांतमेव ते । भवती पृच्छते मां का भविष्यति वदस्व मे

etatte sarvamākhyātamātmavṛttāṃtameva te | bhavatī pṛcchate māṃ kā bhaviṣyati vadasva me

Tudo isto—o relato da minha própria vida—já te foi dito por inteiro. Agora me perguntas: «Quem ela se tornará no futuro?» Dize-me.

Unspecified narrator (male speaker addressing a respected woman); exact dialogue pair not determinable from this single verse alone

Concept: Truthful self-disclosure (ātma-vṛttānta) prepares the ground for right counsel about destiny and duty.

Application: Before seeking guidance, present facts plainly; ask direct questions about the next right step rather than spiraling in fear.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Two figures sit facing each other on a woven mat: the narrator with hands folded after finishing his life-story, and a dignified woman leaning forward with a single, piercing question about the future. The moment hangs like a held breath, as if destiny itself is about to be spoken aloud.","primary_figures":["male narrator","respected woman questioner"],"setting":"interior of a modest home or hermitage room with a low lamp, palm-leaf manuscripts, and a small Vishnu emblem on a shelf","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["warm ochre","sandalwood beige","lamp-gold","leaf green","ink black"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: seated dialogue scene with ornate borders, gold leaf highlights on lamp flame and jewelry, rich red-green textiles, a small Vishnu symbol (shankha-chakra) subtly placed, expressive hand gestures emphasizing inquiry and response.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate indoor conversation, delicate brushwork, soft dawn light entering from a lattice window, gentle earth tones, refined faces showing curiosity and composure, minimalistic sacred objects in the background.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: stylized figures with bold outlines, warm yellow and red background, clear mudras of narration and questioning, a small conch-disc motif near the lamp, calm but expectant mood.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: narrative panel framed by lotus vines, subtle Vaishnava symbols, deep blue border with gold floral work, figures rendered with decorative textiles, emphasis on the sanctity of spoken katha."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"narrative","suggested_raga":"Yaman","pace":"moderate-narrative","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["tanpura drone","soft page-rustle (manuscripts)","single bell strike at question","quiet indoor ambience"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: etatte = etat + te; sarvamākhyātamātmavṛttāntam = sarvam + ākhyātam + ātma-vṛttāntam; ātmavṛttāṃtam = ātma-vṛttāntam; vadasva me = vadasva + me.

FAQs

The verse indicates a male narrator addressing a respected woman (“bhavatī”), but the specific named speaker cannot be confirmed without the surrounding verses of Bhūmi-khaṇḍa 53.

The speaker says he has already narrated his personal account, and now responds to a question about someone’s future identity—“who she will become.”

It models orderly transmission of knowledge: first establishing the background (life-account), then addressing the seeker’s next question about future outcomes with clarity and directness.
