A king’s dharma includes recognizing and honoring valor used for protection of the realm. Virāṭa’s question expresses gratitude and the ethical duty to reward the defender who restores what was unjustly seized.
After the Kurus have carried off Virāṭa’s cattle, a powerful warrior defeats them and recovers the herd. Virāṭa, hearing of this, asks where that famed, mighty hero is so that he may meet and honor him.
