Daitya-āśvāsana of Duryodhana; Karṇa’s assurance and the mobilization of the Kaurava host
मृगया चोचिता राजन्नस्मिन् काले सुतस्य ते । दुर्योधनस्य गमनं समनुज्ञातुमहसि,“राजन! इस समय आपके पुत्र दुर्योधनके लिये हिंसक पशुओंके शिकार करनेका भी उपयुक्त अवसर है। अतः आप इन्हें द्वैतवनमें जानेकी आज्ञा दीजिये”
mṛgayā cocitā rājann asmin kāle sutasya te | duryodhanasya gamanaṃ samanujñātum arhasi ||
Vaiśampāyana disse: “Ó rei, este é um tempo apropriado para teu filho Duryodhana dedicar-se ao esporte régio da caça. Portanto, deves conceder-lhe permissão para partir (para a floresta).”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames royal action in terms of propriety (ucita) and obligation (arhasi): even leisure like hunting is presented as something to be sanctioned responsibly by the king, highlighting how authority and permission are ethically charged in epic narrative.
Vaiśampāyana reports counsel addressed to the king, urging him to allow Duryodhana to depart for a hunting expedition—an apparently ordinary pretext that, in the Vana Parva context, often serves as a gateway to political maneuvering and conflict escalation.
