अग्निनाम-प्रादुर्भावः प्रायश्चित्त-विधानं च
Agni’s Epithets, Manifestations, and Expiation Procedures
उत्तरं श्रुतिसम्बद्ध ब्रवीत्यश्रुतियोजितम् । विप्रवर! जब उसे हितैषी मित्र तथा विद्वान् पुरुष ऐसा करनेसे रोकते हैं, तब वह उसके समर्थनमें अशास्त्रीय उत्तर देते हुए भी उसे वेद-प्रतिपादित बताता है
uttaraṃ śruti-sambaddhaṃ bravīty aśruti-yojitam | vipravara! yadā taṃ hitaiṣī mitraḥ tathā vidvān puruṣaḥ kartum etad nivārayati, tadā sa tasya samarthane aśāstrīyam uttaraṃ bruvan api taṃ veda-pratipāditam iti manyate |
Disse o caçador: «Ele formula a resposta como se estivesse ligada à śruti, embora não esteja de fato conectada ao Veda. Ó melhor dos brâmanes! Quando um amigo bem-intencionado ou um homem erudito tenta contê-lo de tal conduta, ele ainda se defende com um argumento contrário aos śāstras, e mesmo assim insiste que é aprovado pelo Veda.»
व्याध उवाच
Do not misuse the authority of the Veda to justify unethical conduct. When corrected by well-wishers and the learned, one should accept restraint and align one’s reasoning with genuine śāstra rather than inventing ‘Vedic’ support for wrongdoing.
The hunter (Vyādha) is describing a type of person who, when advised by a friendly and wise counselor to stop harmful behavior, responds with clever but unscriptural rationalizations and falsely claims that his position is supported by Vedic revelation.
