अहिंसा सत्यवचनं सर्वभूतहितं परम् । अहिंसा परमो धर्म: स च सत्ये प्रतिष्ठित: । सत्ये कृत्वा प्रतिष्ठां तु प्रवर्तन्ते प्रवृत्तय:,अहिंसा और सत्यभाषण--ये समस्त प्राणियोंके लिये अत्यन्त हितकर हैं। अहिंसा सबसे महान् धर्म है, परंतु वह सत्यमें ही प्रतिष्ठित है। सत्यके ही आधारपर श्रेष्ठ पुरुषोंके सभी कार्य आरम्भ होते हैं
ahiṃsā satyavacanaṃ sarvabhūtahitaṃ param | ahiṃsā paramo dharmaḥ sa ca satye pratiṣṭhitaḥ | satye kṛtvā pratiṣṭhāṃ tu pravartante pravṛttayaḥ |
Disse o caçador: A não violência e a palavra verdadeira são o bem supremo para todos os seres vivos. A não violência é o mais alto dharma; contudo, ela só se sustenta firmemente sobre a verdade. Quando a verdade é posta como fundamento, os dignos põem em movimento seus empreendimentos, e suas ações seguem um curso estável.
