Indradyumna Upākhyāna: On Kīrti, Smṛti, and Restoration
The verse warns that when dharma declines, society shows three linked symptoms: material scarcity, performative religiosity without inner virtue, and the rise of violence—culminating in the collapse of generosity (dāna), a key support of social and moral order.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing the characteristics of the age’s end (yugakṣaya), forecasting moral and social deterioration: people become materially constrained, adopt saintly appearances for display, violence becomes prevalent, and mutual giving and support disappear.
