The Birth and Career Account of Māndhātṛ
शुष्ककण्ठ: पिपासार्त: पानीयार्थी भृशं नृप: । त॑ प्रविश्याश्रमं शान्त: पानीयं सो5भ्ययाचत,वे प्याससे पीड़ित थे। उनका कण्ठ सूख गया था। पानी पीनेकी अत्यन्त अभिलाषासे वे उस आश्रमके भीतर गये और शान्तभावसे जलके लिये याचना करने लगे
śuṣka-kaṇṭhaḥ pipāsārtaḥ pānīyārthī bhṛśaṃ nṛpaḥ | taṃ praviśyāśramaṃ śāntaḥ pānīyaṃ so 'bhyayācata ||
Disse Lomaśa: O rei, com a garganta ressequida e atormentado pela sede, buscando água com urgência, entrou no eremitério. Com porte calmo e contido, pediu respeitosamente água para beber.
लोमश उवाच
Even under physical suffering, one should act with śānti (composure) and humility. The king’s calm, respectful request models dharmic conduct—need does not justify harshness or entitlement, especially for those in power.
A king, severely thirsty and with a parched throat, enters a hermitage in search of water and politely asks the residents for drinking water, as narrated by the sage Lomaśa.
