Surabhi–Indra Dialogue as a Governance Exemplar
व्यास उवाच अयमायाति वै राजन मैत्रेयो भगवानृषि: । अन्विष्य पाण्डवान् भ्रातृनिहैत्यस्मद्दिदृक्षया,व्यासजीने कहा--राजन! ये महर्षि भगवान् मैत्रेय आ रहे हैं। पाँचों पाण्डवबन्धुओंसे मिलकर अब ये हमलोगोंसे मिलनेके लिये यहाँ आते हैं
vyāsa uvāca | ayam āyāti vai rājan maitreyo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ | anvīṣya pāṇḍavān bhrātṝn iha ety asmaddidṛkṣayā ||
Vyāsa disse: “Ó rei, o venerável sábio Maitreya está de fato chegando. Tendo procurado e encontrado os irmãos Pāṇḍava, agora vem até aqui, desejoso de ver-nos.”
व्यास उवाच
The verse foregrounds the ethical role of ṛṣis in the epic: revered sages actively seek out those in distress (here, the Pāṇḍavas) and then approach kings to offer guidance. It signals that dharma is clarified through dialogue with the wise, not merely through power or emotion.
Vyāsa informs the king that the sage Maitreya is arriving. Maitreya has already sought out and met the Pāṇḍava brothers and is now coming to see Vyāsa and the king, setting up an impending encounter and counsel.
