अध्याय ८ — शल्यस्य सत्कारः, वरदानं, पाण्डवसमागमश्च (Śalya’s Reception, the Boon, and Meeting the Pāṇḍavas)
व्यथयन्निव भूतानि कम्पयन्निव मेदिनीम् । शनैर्विश्रामयन् सेनां स ययौ येन पाण्डव:
vyathayann iva bhūtāni kampayann iva medinīm | śanair viśrāmayann senāṃ sa yayau yena pāṇḍavaḥ ||
Disse Vaiśampāyana: O rei Śalya avançou pela rota pela qual poderia chegar rapidamente ao Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira). Ao passar, seu grande exército parecia afligir os seres vivos e fazer tremer a própria terra; ainda assim, ele marchava com constância, detendo-se aqui e ali para dar descanso às tropas em etapas. O verso ressalta o peso moral do poder em marcha: mesmo o movimento disciplinado rumo a um objetivo político impõe pressão inevitável sobre as criaturas e sobre o solo.
