Chapter 49: Sañjaya’s Enumeration of the Pāṇḍava Coalition (पाण्डवसैन्यसमागम-वर्णनम्)
किमसौ चेष्टते सूत योत्स्यमानो युधिष्ठिर: । के वास्य भ्रातृपुत्राणां पश्यन्त्याज्ञेप्सवो मुखम्,सूत! भविष्यमें होनेवाले युद्धके लिये उद्यत होकर राजा युधिष्ठिर कैसी तैयारी कर रहे हैं? उनके भाइयों और पुत्रोंमेंसे कौन-कौन-से लोग उनसे किसी कार्यके लिये आज्ञा पानेकी इच्छासे उनका मुँह जोहते रहते हैं?
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca |
kimasau ceṣṭate sūta yotsyamāno yudhiṣṭhiraḥ |
ke vāsyā bhrātṛputrāṇāṃ paśyanty ājñepsavo mukham, sūta ||
Dhṛtarāṣṭra disse: “Sūta, que preparativos Yudhiṣṭhira está fazendo, enquanto se apronta para a guerra que se aproxima? E, entre seus irmãos e seus filhos, quem são aqueles que mantêm os olhos fixos em seu rosto, ansiosos por receber sua ordem para alguma tarefa?”
धृतराष्ट उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical weight of leadership in wartime: a righteous king’s actions are closely watched, and loyal kin and followers stand ready to serve. It underscores responsibility—commands given in a dharmic framework shape collective conduct, especially when war is imminent.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra, anxious about the approaching conflict, questions Saṃjaya about Yudhiṣṭhira’s concrete preparations for battle and asks which of Yudhiṣṭhira’s close relations—brothers and sons—are attentively awaiting his orders.
