A king should value the dignity of office over personal accumulation: be content with the status and symbols of sovereignty, distribute wealth to dependents, and avoid becoming a greedy all-taker. Good rule is measured by restraint and fair support of one’s people.
In the Udyoga Parva, Vidura delivers counsel on righteous conduct and statecraft. Here he instructs the ruler that kingship entails providing for servants and dependents and not monopolizing resources, emphasizing ethical governance amid the political tensions preceding war.
