भीष्म–दुर्योधनसंवादः — शिखण्डिनं न हन्तुं कारणकथनम्
Amba-ākhyāna prologue
एष योत्स्यति संग्रामे नाशयन् पूर्वसंस्थितम् । परं यशो विप्रथयंस्तव सेनासु भारत,भारत! वह तुम्हारी सेनामें प्रवेश करके अपने पूर्व अपयशका नाश तथा उत्तम सुयशका विस्तार करता हुआ बड़े उत्साहसे युद्ध करेगा
eṣa yotsyati saṅgrāme nāśayan pūrvasaṃsthitam | paraṃ yaśo viprathayaṃs tava senāsu bhārata bhārata ||
Bhīṣma disse: “Este lutará na batalha com grande ardor. Entrando em teus exércitos, ó Bhārata, apagará a desonra que antes criara raízes e difundirá sua mais alta fama.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse frames battle not merely as violence but as a kṣatriya arena where one may erase prior dishonor through courageous action and thereby establish lasting good fame—highlighting the ethical weight placed on reputation, resolve, and duty in the epic’s war ethos.
Bhīṣma points out a particular warrior and predicts his conduct: he will enter the Kuru forces and fight zealously, aiming to remove earlier disgrace and to broadcast his superior renown through valor in the coming conflict.
