Personal ambition must be checked by responsibility toward one’s family and lineage; a leader should not let pride or obstinacy cause the ruin of sons, brothers, and kin.
In the Udyoga Parva’s tense pre-war negotiations, an elder voice urges Duryodhana to reflect on his own family—sons, brothers, and relatives—and to avoid a course of action that would bring destruction upon the Bharata clan because of him.
