आसीत् तु मे भोगपते संशय: पुण्यसंचये । सो5हमुछ्छव्रतं साधो चरिष्याम्यर्थसाधनम्,नागराज! मुझे पुण्यसंग्रहके विषयमें संशय हो गया था। मैं यह निश्चय नहीं कर पाता था कि किस साधनको अपनाऊँ? किंतु अब वह संदेह दूर हो गया है। साधो! अब मैं अपने अभीष्ट अर्थकी सिद्धिके लिये उज्छव्रतका ही आचरण करूँगा
āsīt tu me bhogapate saṁśayaḥ puṇya-saṁcaye | so 'ham ucchvavrataṁ sādho cariṣyāmy artha-sādhanam ||
O brâmane disse: “Ó senhor dos gozos (bhogapati), surgira em mim uma dúvida quanto ao acúmulo de mérito. Eu não conseguia decidir qual disciplina deveria ser adotada como meio. Mas agora essa incerteza foi dissipada. Ó bom — ó rei dos Nāga — para alcançar o fim que pretendo, empreenderei a observância chamada Ucchvavrata como meu meio escolhido.”
ब्राह्मण उवाच
The verse highlights ethical discernment in choosing a spiritual discipline: when uncertain about how merit (puṇya) is best accumulated, one should seek clarity and then commit firmly to a chosen vow (vrata) as an appropriate means (sādhana) toward one’s rightful aim.
A Brahmin addresses the Nāgarāja, explaining that he had been troubled by doubt about the correct method for gathering merit. Having resolved that doubt, he declares his decision to undertake the specific observance called Ucchvavrata to accomplish his intended objective.
