Śvetadvīpa-varṇana and Śāstra-pravartana (Śānti Parva 322)

सुशीघ्रमपि धावन्तं विधानमनुधावति । शेते सह शयानेन येन येन यथा कृतम्‌

suśīghram api dhāvantaṃ vidhānam anudhāvati | śete saha śayānena yena yena yathā kṛtam ||

Disse Bhishma: Ainda que um homem corra com extrema rapidez, a consequência ordenada de seus atos corre atrás dele. Quando se deita para dormir, ela se deita com ele; aonde quer que vá, e de qualquer modo que tenha agido, o fruto dessa ação permanece atado a ele. Assim, o karma não abandona quem o pratica — como uma sombra, segue-o no repouso, no movimento e em toda empreitada — ensinando que a causalidade moral é inevitável e que a responsabilidade pessoal não pode ser ultrapassada pela fuga.
