रागे मोहे च सम्प्राप्ते क्वचित्‌ सत्त्वं समाश्रितम्‌ सहस्रेषु नर: वश्रिन्मोक्षबुद्धि समाश्रित:,संसारके प्राणी एक-दूसरेको खा जाते हैं, यह कैसी अशुभ घटना है। इसपर दृष्टिपात करो। बाल्यावस्थामें मनपर मोह छाया रहता है और वृद्धावस्थामें शरीरका अमंगलकारी विनाश उपस्थित होता है। राग और मोह प्राप्त होनेपर अनेक दोष उत्पन्न होते हैं, इन सबको जानकर कहीं किसी-किसीको ही सत्त्वगुणसे युक्त देखा जाता है। सहसरों मनुष्योंमेंसे कोई बिरला ही मोक्षविषयक बुद्धिका आश्रय लेता है

rāge mohe ca samprāpte kvacit sattvaṃ samāśritam | sahasreṣu naraḥ kaścin mokṣa-buddhiṃ samāśritaḥ ||

Bhīṣma disse: Quando surgem a paixão e a ilusão, só raramente alguém se refugia na clareza e na bondade (sattva). Entre milhares de pessoas, apenas algum ser excepcional adota um entendimento voltado para a libertação. Vendo como os seres, no ciclo do saṃsāra, se devoram uns aos outros, e como a infância é sombreada pelo apego enquanto a velhice traz a ominosa dissolução do corpo, deve-se refletir: da paixão e da ilusão nascem muitas faltas; sabendo disso, o sábio busca o caminho que conduz para além do cativeiro.

Passion (rāga) and delusion (moha) generate many faults and keep beings bound in saṃsāra; therefore one should cultivate sattva (clarity) and develop mokṣa-buddhi—an intellect aimed at liberation. Such liberative discernment is rare, found only in exceptional individuals among many.

In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and liberation, Bhishma addresses Yudhishthira with reflective counsel: observing the harshness of worldly life and the inevitability of aging and bodily decay, he emphasizes how few people rise above attachment and delusion to pursue liberation.
