Prajāpatis, Deva-Groups, and the Ṛṣis Assigned to the Directions
यतो जगत सर्वमिदं प्रसूतं ज्ञात्वा$5त्मवन्तो व्यतियान्ति यत् तत् । यन्मन्त्रशब्दैरकृतप्रकाशं तदुच्यमानं शृणु मे परं॑ यत्
yato jagat sarvam idaṁ prasūtaṁ jñātvātmavanto vyatiyānti yat tat | yanmantraśabdair akṛtaprakāśaṁ tad ucyamānaṁ śṛṇu me paraṁ yat ||
Bhishma disse: “Aquilo de que todo este universo surgiu—ao conhecê-lo, os sábios, senhores de si e discernentes, ultrapassam o giro deste mundo e alcançam o estado supremo. E aquilo cuja verdadeira natureza não é plenamente revelada apenas pelo som dos mantras védicos—ouve enquanto te descrevo essa Realidade suprema.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse points to a supreme source-principle from which the universe arises; realizing it enables disciplined, self-controlled seekers to transcend worldly existence and reach the highest state. It also suggests that mere recitation or verbal formulation of Vedic mantras does not by itself fully disclose that Reality—direct realization and deeper inquiry are implied.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma addresses the listener (traditionally Yudhishthira) and introduces a forthcoming exposition on the highest metaphysical truth—the ultimate cause of the cosmos and the knowledge that leads to liberation.
