विभज्य दण्डं रक्ष्यास्तु धर्मतो न यदृच्छया । दुर्वाचा निग्रहो दण्डो हिरण्यबहुलस्तथा
bhīṣma uvāca |
vibhajya daṇḍaṁ rakṣyāstu dharmato na yadṛcchayā |
durvācā nigraho daṇḍo hiraṇyabahulastathā ||
Bhīṣma disse: “A punição deve ser repartida com distinção e aplicada segundo o dharma, nunca por mero capricho. A repreensão com palavras duras, para refrear, é uma forma de punição; do mesmo modo, a punição que exige abundante ouro (uma multa pesada) também é prescrita.”
