Apaddharma Determination: Dialogue of Viśvāmitra and the Śvapaca

Educational Q&A

Even when an adversary speaks sweetly and offers gifts, a prudent person should not surrender autonomy or place himself under an enemy’s control without a compelling necessity; reputation and flattery are not sufficient grounds for trust.

In Lomaśa’s narration, the mouse remains mentally steady despite the cat’s praise and apparent goodwill, and replies that he may feel pleased by the cat’s words but cannot trust him or ally with him, since wise people do not submit to enemies without special cause.
