anāvṛṣṭir anuprāptā tadā dvādaśavārṣikī |
Vaiśampāyana disse: Então instalou-se uma seca, que durou doze anos. Nos dias em que eles habitavam na floresta do Himālaya em busca de sustento, não caiu chuva alguma nesta terra por doze anos. Privada de água por tanto tempo, a região foi lançada à escassez, lembrando a todos que o sustento e a ordem social dependem do equilíbrio da natureza e da conduta responsável de governantes e comunidades em tempos de calamidade.
