The verse teaches āhāra-śuddhi and disciplined conduct: one should not eat or handle food that has become saliva-contaminated, as it is deemed impure and associated with demonic tendencies; the wise avoid it deliberately.
Vaiśampāyana states a rule of proper conduct regarding food: saliva-tainted food is described as belonging to the Rākṣasas, and the listener is instructed that a prudent person should carefully refrain from such impure practices.
